Spring Semester

Now that the meetings are over, it is finally time to get back into the classroom and talk about mathematics.  While I enjoyed my time off and spending time with Paula and Arthur, I am very excited to be back in the classroom teaching.  The students seem rested and happy and there is a feeling of euphoria mixed among the excitement that a new semester promises.  I wanted to spend some time reflecting on the experience I’ve had the first two days of classes.  I hope you’ll also share your experiences as you start the new semester (whether it started already for you or will start in the future).

Schedule

This semester I will be teaching two sections of Calculus 2 and two sections of Mathematical Reasoning (introduction to proofs).  While I may be forgetting some semester, the last time I only had two preps was when I was in graduate school and only taught one course at a time.  Not only that, but I’ve taught both of these classes before, so I won’t have to create material from scratch.  It really is quite an amazing feeling.  Hopefully having fewer preps will allow me to spend more time on improving my classes.  As I looked ahead at this schedule, I found myself wondering about other people’s schedules.   Therefore, I thought I’d ask.  Let me know how many distinct classes and total sections you teach each semester in the comments below.  Are you excited for you new schedule?

Repeat Students

Because I taught Calculus 1 last semester and I am teaching Calculus 2 this semester, I have actually seen quite a few familiar faces in my classes.  While for some teachers, this may be a regular occurrence, I haven’t taught Calculus 2 in a couple of years.  As such, most of the time that I have repeated students, there is a break of a year or two between my first and second class with them.  Being able to see such a large number of students in class that I already knew made me extremely happy.  It was a great feeling to know that these students appreciated my class last semester enough that they were willing to take another course with me.

Join Me

This coming semester I’ve also decided to try something new with my classes.  In particular, I’ve created a webpage on this site for both of my classes.  During the past months that I’ve been writing for this blog, I have often found myself writing about material related to the classes I was teaching.  As such, I thought that making these things readily available to my students would offer them extra resources as they are learning new material.  I’m not sure how it will go, but I hope they will find it useful.

Additionally, I want to invite anyone else that is reading to also follow along with the classes.  That is, if you are taking or teaching Calculus 2 or an introduction to proofs course, please visit the associated linked pages to see what we are working on in class.  I will be regularly updating these pages to reflect what we are currently covering in the course.  In addition, I have created sections in the forums for each of the classes so that they can discuss homework issues.  If you would like to join in or get help yourself, please feel free to do so.  The more people we have working together, the better off everyone will be.

I hope everyone has a wonderful semester, and I look forward to hearing about how things are going for you.  I hope you’ll stop by and join in on our class conversations as well.
